Getting Started on Abela

You can download the Abela app from Google Play Store, Apple’s App Store, or Huawei’s AppGallery on your mobile phone.

Abela is one of South Africa’s trusted new banks that allows you to deposit and withdraw money, buy vouchers, pay friends and family, and send money home safely.

You must be 16 years old with a valid ID and ID number. Registration is limited to one ID number and one registered cell phone number per person.

1. Download the Abela app and enter your registered cell phone number.

2. After receiving verification, enter your personal details, create a password, and provide a registered South African ID, passport, or asylum number.

3. Create a PIN code and take a selfie for your profile.

4. Once verified, you will be taken to the home screen to start using Abela.

KYC (Know Your Customer) verification involves collecting a copy of a government-issued ID (National ID, Passport, or Asylum papers). As a third-party payment processor, we are required by law to verify all customers.

Ensure that your National ID, Passport, or Asylum papers:

  • Are clear with no glare or reflection
  • Have all personal information visible
  • Include all four corners of the document in the photo

Account verification typically takes a few business hours on weekdays (Monday-Friday). It may take longer on weekends and public holidays. If additional information is needed, we will contact you directly.

Your ID/Passport copy is used only during the KYC verification process. Afterward, all information and documents are securely stored on our servers.

Yes, you can deposit cash at any Nedbank ATM and Pick n Pay store nationwide.

Once you have an available balance in your Abela account, you can buy airtime, electricity, data, or gaming vouchers.

You can pay at any location with a QR Code (SnapScan, Zapper, Masterpass) for free using your Abela account.

Yes, you can use Abela to pay for Mukuru, Mama Money, Sikhona, and EcoCash orders to send money to friends and family outside South Africa at no additional cost.

Yes, you can send money to their phone number. They will need to join Abela to claim their payment.

Share your Abela bank details and unique reference number (found under 'deposit my salary' on the Abela app) with your employer.

Yes, you can get a statement from your Abela Account or Abela Card for a specified time period (e.g., last 7 days, month to date, last month, last 3 months, or a custom date range).

Referral Program

Once your referred friend or family member signs up with your referral code, completes KYC, and deposits R250, you will receive R10 and they will receive R40.

You can invite up to 20 people. To refer more users, please contact customer support to become an Abela Ambassador. Ensure referred users sign up with your referral code, complete KYC, and deposit R250 for both to receive the reward.

Abela Cards

Abela offers a physical MasterCard, usable at any store or online.

Order your Abela card from the app under 'cards'. Ensure you have R150 in your Abela wallet and choose a convenient delivery location.

Your card will be delivered within 2-3 working days to your chosen location. Use the SMS from Pargo when collecting your card.

Your Abela card has a separate balance from your Abela wallet. Both balances are shown on the app and your Abela card can be topped up via the app from your Abela wallet or by Bank Transfer/EFT.

You can use your Abela card at any store in South Africa and for online purchases. Withdrawals can be made at any ATM nationwide.

The card costs R150 to order and activate, including delivery. The card incurs a monthly fee of R29.

Yes, your money is secure within your Abela account. Only you have access to your account. Funds are stored securely in a global bank account. Always keep your password and PIN safe.
